GROWER SPOTLIGHT

Could you tell us about how the karma cup came to be?

I saw an opportunity to do something different than other cups happening at the time. I wanted to create an atmosphere and a place where growers could compete on a fair and even playing field, while also ensuring a good time for the judges. I was trying to create a different ethos for the cups back then. The first year, we had twice as many entries as any other cup at that point, so I realized that it was resonating with people.

What’s different about the 2024 karma cup?

In the early days, we would put out the call, and anyone who had something they thought was good would enter. I didn’t censor it unless it was absolute garbage or had issues. If it was fine, it went out to the judges. Now, we do a more curated approach—brands send us samples, and we try them to select the top seven in each category. There are four categories: Indica, Sativa, Hybrid, and Pre-Roll. These selected competitors make up the final judge’s kit, with seven competitors in each.

What’s the judging process?

There’s intense judging to find the top 7, and once that’s done, the products end up on OCS shelves and licensed retailers. The judge’s kit is sold to customers, who also get to judge the products and provide feedback to the world and the brand about what they think is the best. At the award ceremony, we announce the top brands—first, second, and third place—and celebrate with awesome trophies, music, and a great time.

What are some legacy values you uphold?

Our legacy values center around awesome weed, quality, having a good time, consistency, and respect for the plant and the products. That’s what I’ve always tried to create—an atmosphere of respect for cannabis and a fun experience. Now, I’m bringing that ethos into the recreational market, trying to get back to that old-school vibe with good quality.

What’s your definition of a good quality nutrient?

A great product is not just about visual appearance. If it doesn’t burn well and taste good, it’s not a good product. For me, it’s about taste and how well it burns. Of course, it also has to look stellar. I value consistency in nutrients—something that is the same formula every time and provides reliable results. Having brand support is also important, especially when troubleshooting. Being able to get knowledgeable answers and help is huge.
